Timeshift v19.08

Timeshift v19.08 is now available.

What’s New

New PPA

There’s a new PPA available for Timeshift. This is a dedicated PPA that contains packages only for Timeshift.

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/timeshift
sudo apt update
sudo apt install timeshift

The previous PPA ppa:teejee2008/ppa continues to be available, for people who are still using it.

Sparse file handling

Rsync snapshots are now created with the --sparse option. This is a little slower but handles sparse files correctly.

Package manager cache

Package manager caches are now excluded by default for rsync snapshots.

/var/cache/apt/archives/*
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/*
/var/cache/yum/*
/var/cache/dnf/*
/var/cache/eopkg/*
/var/cache/xbps/*
/var/cache/zypp/*
/var/cache/edb/*

Navigation buttons

The spacing was adjusted for navigation buttons at bottom of the Backup/Delete/Restore/Wizard windows.

Before
After

Date format

The date format can now be changed from Settings window. A new tab was added for miscellaneous settings.

An OK button was added for closing the Settings window

Under debian (linux mx) i cannot add an Ubuntu type ppa depository. Is there another way to install the latest timeshift 19.8 (19.1 now in use)

    1. Tony George

You can add the PPA in Debian/MX after installing some packages.
      sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
After this you can use the add-apt-repository command. It will create a source list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Check this file and change the debian version (“stretch” or “buster”) to “bionic”.
You can also create the source list manually and import the public key.

Sorry, unsuccesfull installing timeshift 19.08 under Linux MX 18.3

    sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
    result:
software-properties-common is already the newest version (0.96.20.2-1).

    sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/timeshift
    result:

The second method unclear to me, visit which PPA page and how to get timeshift PPA source.list entry

Thank you so much for the great program! And tell me, please, where can I view information about SHA256 or MD5 to compare it when downloading a file? Nowhere couldn’t find this info.

    1. Tony George

You can install it from PPA. The package manager will verify signatures before downloading.

(19.1 Nice work BTW…) Question: I tested TS on the HDD the OS (Mint 19.2, Cinn 4.2.4) is in before delegating TS to an external HDD. I moved 200GB in the test.

The transition to the external drive went well. Now my OS HDD has a 200GB TS “Snapshots” folder I can’t remove without going to sudo, etc.

Since I made the test in my Admin login there should be a way to have permissions to delete anything I made there. Is there a way to delete the leftover hdd bloat without working in root access?

It might be an important detail for the next version if that’s the case. Is the idea that sensitive information from root is being duplicated and it doesn’t belong in Admin level? If that’s the case then the special Admin permission would only apply to deletion, if that’s possible.
(Sorry if you see this twice. It disappeared when I logged into my wordpress.)

Is there any option to get the software to work OOB on Debian 9 or Debian 10? Debian does not like the @ and @home that Ubuntu uses. I can install your software on Debian but it refuses to use my btrfs / and btrfs /home. I get the error “Selected snapshot device is not a system disk” and “Select BTRFS system disk with root subvolume (@)”

    1. JoeII

I think if TimeShift worked out of the box most all Debian users would be formatting BTRFS and using TimeShift to be able to revert the system back when ugly things happen. There are a LOT of Debian users that I think would contribute to get this feature….

There should be a way to schedule the time of day Timeshift backups are performed. Currently, it is not obvious how the backup time is selected nor is it displayed in any information.

  9. Phil

Hello, it would be a good idea to offer a mini iso to restore TimeShift snapshots by booting on a usb key without being dependent on a Linux distribution. And maybe also offering Flatpack versions of your program would appeal to some users / donors who like to always have the latest versions available 🙂 Regards

  10. Joe

TimeShift keeps waking up my CPU from sleep. (9th gen i7). No documentation, so I don’t know how to exclude videos from my back ups!

  11. Yuri Weinstein

Will TimeShift work for ubuntu with encrypted hard drive ?
    Thx

  12. rasmith1959

You can easily choose which files or folders to exclude from a system snapshot by clicking on Settings, then the filters tab.

  13. RB Long

Linux Mint 19.3 Trying to create a snapshot to dedicated external 32 GB USB drive (Ext4) ‘Timeshift’.
Nemo file manager can see the external BU folder ‘Timeshift’ and contents. Permissions are: root – Create & delete files. Size is what one would expect. (13.5 GB used. 17.3 GB free.)
Trouble is that Timeshift app tells me ‘No snapshots available’. Also tells me 18.9 GB available on the drive. Browse command sees the external folder but does not recognize relevant (or any) snapshot.
    Help suggestions much appreciated.
    Bob

  14. Ken

    Hi! Great app!
I use Ubuntu 18.04 without GUI. Can’t find out how to save /home/user directory to snapshot in Timeshift without GUI.
By default Timeshift saves only / (root) directory. What command to use to turn on saving of /home/user directory?
    ThX!

  15. Marshall Neill

For some reason Timeshift will not backup /var/cache/pacman/pkg even though it is specified in the ‘Filters’ section and is shown in the ‘Summary’ but when I browse the snapshot; completely empty.
Any ideas on how to resolve?

  16. herbie643

Timeshift won’t backp var/cache/pacman/pkg even though specified to backup said directory.
Any ideas as it worked before maybe 6mos ago or more.
